Nail business expert: the real reason behind your quiet spells

Nail mentor, Hannah Clayton, offers insight into why business might be slow…

One of the most common phrases I hear from beauty professionals that I work with is, ‘It’s really quiet at the moment‘. When I dig a little deeper, the issue isn’t often related to skill, but the fact that nobody knows about them!

Being great at what you do is important, of course. But if people don’t see you, hear about you or recognise your name, they simply can’t book with you, because they aren’t sure who you are or how you can help.

Many professionals believe being visible means posting more nail photos on social media. But things have changed – big time!

Clients today aren’t just choosing a set of nails; they’re choosing a person, an experience and a brand.

They want to know who they are sitting with for an hour or two. They want to feel comfortable before they even walk through the door. They want to know what you look like, sound like and what you do behind-the-scenes, because we are all nosy!

That’s why the technicians who stand out online are rarely the ones who only post nail designs; they show more than that. They share their standards, workspaces, routines, knowledge and personalities. They talk about their days, clients and what they’ve done away from the nail desk. That’s the kind of content that builds familiarity, and familiarity builds trust.

How to increase your business’ visibility

I often tell my mentees that you can’t be the best kept secret in town and expect a full diary. Visibility means showing up consistently enough that people remember you exist. That doesn’t mean posting every single day, but it does mean staying present and connected via social media stories, grid posts and videos.

Simple content can be incredibly powerful. Showing how you prepare your desk, explaining why you prioritise nail health, talking through a product you love or sharing a glimpse into your working day all help potential clients feel connected to you. Personally, my cockapoo, Eric, increases my views like crazy!

Visibility also extends beyond social media. Some of the most successful technicians I work with build strong local networks. They collaborate with nearby hairdressers or beauty therapists, attend small business events, leave business cards in local cafés or gyms, and tell people about their brands.

Word of mouth is still one of the strongest marketing tools we have. I built my business of over 90 clients mainly using word of mouth.

Confidence rarely comes first. Take action and I promise that confidence follows. The more you show up, the easier it becomes. The more positive responses you receive, the more natural it feels. Talking to camera on social media can feel cringe, but the more you do it, the more you’ll love it!

Over time, people will start recognising your work. Your name will circulate locally and opportunities will appear that weren’t there before. This is how businesses grow: not through luck, but through consistent visibility over time.

So, if your diary feels quieter than you’d like, ask yourself one question: are people actually seeing you? Because if they don’t know you exist, they can’t book with you. But when they do know you, recognise you and trust you, that’s when things start to change.
