Nail mentor, Hannah Clayton, shares how to identify clients that build a healthy business…

There’s a lot of talk in the nail industry about nightmare clients. I often talk about the late ones, the no-shows, the constant complainers – aka the mood hoovers! But very few people stop and ask: what actually makes a good nail client?

A good client isn’t just someone who books regularly. Loyalty alone doesn’t automatically make someone right for your business – trust me! A good client respects your time. They arrive on time, they don’t push your boundaries, and they don’t expect you to bend the rules just for them. They understand that this is your job, not just a hobby. I call these the green clients.

A good client also values your work. They trust your advice, appreciate your skills, and don’t constantly compare your prices to someone down the road or a set they saw online. This used to happen a lot with clients I had years ago, and when I said goodbye to them, I felt so much better!

A good client fits your business. They book the services you want to offer. They suit your working hours. They help create the type of diary you enjoy working through and that never feels like a chore.

Most importantly, a good client leaves you feeling better, not worse. You finish their appointment feeling proud of your work, and with lifted spirits!

Many of us hold onto difficult clients simply because they’ve been coming to us for years. But if someone regularly drains your energy, questions your prices or makes you doubt your work, they may not be the right client for the business you’re trying to build. I call these red clients.

Your client base shapes your work life, affects your income, mood and confidence – and it has to feel right. Instead of asking ‘how do I get more clients?’, a more powerful question is ‘how do I get more of the right clients?’. Because a diary full of the right people will always feel better than a diary full of the wrong people.
