Diet Coke nails are trending: what are they & how can you recreate them?

Given the recent obsession with food-related nail trends – glazed donut, blueberry milk and butter yellow to name a few, it is no surprise that Gen Z’s latest nail art craze borrows from one of the world’s most popular drinks.
Diet Coke nails are dominating social media, but what does the trend actually involve?
The trend is inspired by the carbonated effects of the drink and the liquid’s dark brown hue. A literal interpretation of the trend is also present and sees nail artists craft the likeness of Diet Coke packaging in miniature. Tin can claws have been popping up all over nail lovers’ TikTok ‘For You’ pages.
Diet Coke nail designs are mainly characterised by dark brown cat eye effects that mimic the bubbling soda. When manipulated with a magnet, the small glittery particles that are characteristic of cat eye products form fizzy fingertips that evoke the carbonated contents of a Diet Coke can.

The rise in popularity of Diet Coke nails can be put down to two things: neutrality and nostalgia. Firstly, as a neutral hue, brown is versatile and wearable, suiting all styles. The colour offers a classy manicure upgrade, while cat eye shimmer adds a fun feature.
Secondly, as noted by many trend prediction sites, nostalgia is a big driving force behind many recent trends. Launched in the early 1980s, Diet Coke has been a staple soda for years. It’s retro-style packaging and ‘vintage’ connotations have peaked the interest of Gen Z, who notoriously love a nostalgic beauty trend.
