Inside the Pennsylvania nail salon where tiny canvases meet a big sense of calm

When the city inspector signed off on Elizabeth Tighe Nail Spa in Scranton, US, he had a confession. “I like to think of myself as a pretty grouchy old man,” he told owner, Liz. “But for some reason standing in this nail spa, I have an overwhelming sense of calm and happiness.”

So, what makes Liz’s nail space so special?

Liz Tighe

Behind the business is a woman who spent 30 years as a public school art teacher before retiring in 2025. Rather than stepping back from creativity, she stepped into The Beauty Institute, earned her nail technician licence and found a new passion: ‘creating art on tiny canvases’.

Elizabeth Tighe Nail Spa has a story woven into its walls. The building has been owned by Liz’s husband’s family for years, having several different lives as a credit union, a gift shop and a home health care office, before becoming Liz’s father-in-law’s apartment. It was this final chapter that gave the space its soul.

“My husband’s father was the last person to live in the space, and he was one of the happiest people I’ve ever known,” Liz reflects. “Being able to bring life, joy and positive energy back into a place that meant so much to him is incredibly special to me.”

The transformation from apartment to nail spa took five months, resulting in a whimsical, zen-like space where artwork adorns the walls and plants fill every corner. Clients’ first view of the salon is a striking floral mural, before they walk into the ‘quaint waiting room’. “So many people have asked if they can just bring a book and sit there, even if they don’t have an appointment,” Liz laughs.

That feeling is entirely by design. Each morning, Liz intentionally blends essential oils to set the tone for the day. Appointments are one-on-one only: a deliberate choice for her clientele, many of whom are fellow educators craving tranquillity after high-pressure days.

“I’ve listened to women complain about their experience in the nail salon – of being rushed and their nail tech having three or four people waiting,” Liz says. “That’s the opposite of what I’m trying to do. You are never rushed. I am there for you and you alone.”

Elizabeth Tighe Nail Spa’s services span nail lacquer and gel manicures, builder gel overlays, nail extensions and pedicures, with a primary focus on natural nail health. Liz uses a considered list of brands including Luminary Nail Systems, American Creator, CND™ and Holo Taco. The nail tech continues to invest in her education, recently completing a builder gel class.

As for the future, her vision remains rooted in the same intention that built the space. A planned infrared sauna will soon complete the back of the salon, increasing its offering as a self-care destination. “My goal is for it to remain a place of calm where people can step away from busy days and truly unwind,” Liz says. “I hope clients leave smiling, relaxed and genuinely happy.”
