Narelle Wharton didn’t follow a mood board when creating her home salon. She followed a Coca-Cola can – and the result is every bit as bold and beautiful as she imagined.

After completing her NVQ Level 2 in Beauty, Narelle started her nail career as she meant to go on: with an extensive amount of education and skill development. “After qualifying in 2006, all I wanted to do was continue to learn as much as I could,” she says.

Narelle obtained qualifications from notable education companies and trainers – such as Glitterbels, CND™, Michelle Porter and Young Nails – before her career led her to owning a high street salon.

“After a while paying huge overheads, I made the decision last year to downsize and move back home,” Narelle reveals.

With the help of her family, she decided to convert her garage into home salon, Narelle Beauty. “The conversion took around four months from start to finish,” she says. “I am so lucky to have such a wonderful family that were willing to give up their time to help me.”

When it came to décor, Narelle had one thing in mind: colour. “Although I love the vibe of aesthetically pleasing neutral interiors, I wanted my salon to be bold and girly,” she tells Scratch.

Inspiration can strike anywhere – for Narelle, it came in the supermarket aisle: “I spotted limited-edition Diet Coke packaging and was immediately sold on the deep mauve colour.” The idea was confirmed when a Glitterbels parcel arrived, its pink and red packaging the perfect complement to her vision.

The result is a two-toned dusty rose and blush pink interior that is, in Narelle’s own words, ‘dramatic and romantic but still very relaxing’.

The Castleford-based salon offers a multitude of nail services and systems, including gel polish, builder gel, acrylic, hard gel, full coverage tips and pedicures. “I mostly use Glitterbels as it offers me the creativity I love – the brand put the excitement back into nails for me,” Narelle shares. “I also use Footlogix products during my pedicure treatments.”

Narelle Beauty also provides waxing, lash and brow services, for which Narelle uses brands such as wax:One and LashUs.

As for the future, there’s plenty to look forward to as Narelle has recently become an educator for Glitterbels. “I’m so excited about this new opportunity,” she says with a smile.
