America’s biggest sporting event, the Super Bowl, took place last night (8 February) and saw NFL team, Seattle Seahawks, beat New England Patriots.

But one of the most talked-about moments was the half-time show, where Puerto Rican music artist & actor, Bad Bunny, made history by becoming the first musician to perform entirely in Spanish at a Super Bowl. He was joined by singers, Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin.

Bad Bunny is known for sporting eye-catching nail art to match his extravagant fashion choices, and used the half-time show to spotlight nail artistry on a huge stage. The Super Bowl is typically the most-watched event on US television, and around one minute into his 14-minute performance, the musician walked past a nail desk, where he interacted with a nail tech and client.

The nail tech was Madelyn Nuñez of @laindianailz, who thanked Bad Bunny for the special moment on Instagram.

The music performance was described as ‘a love letter to Puerto Rico’, and featured other references to Latin American culture such as Puerto Rican food, domino tables and a casita (little house) with celebrities including Pedro Pascal, Cardi B and Jessica Alba dancing on the porch.

Nail techs took to social media to praise Bad Bunny’s celebration of the nail craft. @ivonneenailz, shared the nail tech cameo on Instagram, writing: “Even Bad Bunny knows… nail techs are essential!” Meanwhile, Florida-based pro, @ivanalepi, commented: “Bad Bunny really said: nail techs deserve the spotlight too. As a nail artist I felt SO represented […] Bad Bunny really brought nail tech culture to the biggest stage.”

For LA nail stylist & educator, Johana Castillo of @masterweenay, this scene ‘[hit] different’, as the celebrity tech revealed that she created nail styles for the half-time show.

“Unfortunately the final approved looks didn’t end up being used on the night, even though they had been selected beforehand,” Johana exclusively tells Scratch. “However, it was a big moment for me, especially knowing there was a nail tech cameo shot involved.”

“I was so excited about how the designs came together. They felt too special not to share, even if they didn’t make it on-screen,” the nail artist continues. “There were some last-minute logistics involved, including an overnight shipment that was lost, and the team ended up working with backup sets I had prepared.

“So while the exact looks I posted weren’t featured, they were very much part of the creative process leading up to the event. I’m incredibly grateful to have been included in the collaboration and have had the opportunity to contribute creatively at that level.”
